Race Management Preparations

Published Fri 05 Jan 2018

Preparations for the 2018 Australian Yachting Championships to be hosted by the Sandringham Yacht Club on Port Phillip Bay between Friday 19 and Sunday 21 January 2018 are well underway.

Entries are growing by the day and the club is particularly excited by the overseas entries “Derucci”  (Dong Qing) a TP 52 from China and Ran Tan 11 (Brian Peterson) from New Zealand.

Combined with the strong line up of other TP52 ‘s “ICHI BAN” (Matt Allen), “Envy Scooters BB52”  (Barry Cuneo) and “Secret Men’s Business” (Geoff Boettcher) combined with “Patrice” (Tony Kirby),  “Smuggler” (Sebastion Bohm)  and “Aikin – Hames Sharley” ( Cailin Howard)  racing is sure to be close and exciting.

A strong contingent of Victorian yachts including “Wicked “ (Mike and Mark Welsh) and a fleet of J111’s will no doubt keep the smaller divisions honest.

Adding to the interest is the growing entry list in the multihull event. Interest from South Australia has been fantastic. To date there are 9 entries in the Multihull National Championship with more expected.  When support events such as the AMS Cup and PHS Quarterdeck Trophy are included the club is excited and focused on making the event a success.

Booklet providing the Sailing Instructions and Regatta information is being produced and the onshore hospitality will not disappoint.  The Sandringham Yacht Club boasts wonderful facilities including a state of the art floating marina, lift out and hardstand, a member’s bar with a great view of the racing and reasonably priced food and beverages | LEARN MORE

However, the organizing committee realises that it is the on-water racing that is the priority and has organized a world-class Race Management team to officiate at the Championships and other events.

The Sandringham Yacht Club is blessed with world-class volunteers who have a proven track record in running important events.

The Regatta Team is headed by Principal Race Officer Kevin Wilson, a veteran official of the London, Sydney and Beijing Olympic Games, Sail Melbourne and many World, National and State Championships.

He is supported by his twin brother Ross Wilson, also a veteran of the Olympics and numerous Championships.  Ross will be the Race Officer in charge of the Mono Hull course whilst our other International Race Officers,  Graeme Watt and Steve Aulich will manage the Multi Hull event.  Other officials on the start boats include National Race Officer, Peter Taylor and the Club’s Race Management Training  Instructor, Craig Wiley.   Craig has trained most of the club’s mark boat and RIB crews to a high standard and we are very confident the teams will produce a quality event.

A National Jury, to be chaired by our SYC resident International Accredited Judge Robert Ware and consisting of another International and three National judges has also been recruited.  Also part of the team are two accredited measurers to deal with any technical issues should they arise.

Added to the long list of volunteers are members who will be allocated to our interstate visitors to ensure they are made welcome and to assist them if required. Cost effective catering will be available to enable competitors to pre-order for their convenience.

The Sandringham Yacht Club is looking forward to hosting the event and is doing everything it can to make the Championships a successful and memorable experience.

Should you be considering entering the event, please do so soon to be included in our plans. For more information about the event please do not hesitate to call the SYC Boating Department on (03) 9599 0999.

We look forward to seeing you all in the New Year. As the PRO indicated at our last meeting - All we need to do now is to add the beer and to provide some great racing!
